We Help You Design Your Decking

Firstly, you will not have to design your deck alone. We will help you every step of the way…. free of charge. We are invested in making sure that all our customers get fantastic looking and functioning decks that they love. We have 20 years’ experience in decking design and building, so we can make sure you make the most of your space, no matter how big or how small; that you follow appropriate regulations and get the right permissions and ultimately are able to enjoy your deck for years to come.

Step 1: Location & Usage

You can help us by explaining how you intend to use the deck, which areas gets the best sun, and which view is the most important to you. Think about your furniture that you want and how you would prefer it grouped or positioned before we finalise the design. Tell us if you plan to have any barbeque grills or open flamed burners on your deck. Consider your neighbours and whether you want privacy fencing and how the height of the deck or fence might impact them.

Step 2: Colours & Finishing’s

We will discuss different colours, textures and finishings and show you samples that you can match to your house or caravan. We can get creative with different patterns, textures, levels, edging and colours or keep it simple and sleek. Plan lighting in advance. We can help you design a lighting solution that is both practical and beautiful. Different sizes, shapes and colours of lights are available to choose from. We can even build in and matching fixtures such as planters, benches, bars and tables. Different levels can be used as a feature or to handle differing door heights or a sloping garden.

Step 3: Regulations & Planning

There are some practical things to consider too. Planning permission may be required for anything over 500mm in height. Building regulations require us to put a railing/balustrade on any section that is higher than 300mm off the ground, however, you could choose a planter instead. Our railings/balustrades come in complimentary or matching colours and you can choose from pickets or glass or just use glass alone, no railing. We will need to consider drains, waterpipes and manholes that may require a hatch in the deck to gain access.

Step 4: Consider The Weather

Consider the weather. We can suggest pergolas or bespoke covered areas to protect you from rain; glass enclosures or balustrade or even sunken areas to protect windy areas enabling you to use your deck all year round. If you want a BBQ or wood burning stove, we can fit stylish stoned/slate/granite/quartz insets. Consider cushion storage, wood log storage, bin enclosures which can all be built to match. On decks that have sufficient height with space underneath, we can skirt your deck to provide other secure storage facilities underneath.

Step 5: Extra Amenities

Consider a kitchen or bar area which also could have slate/granite/quartz/concrete bench tops. Lights require a power source as do hot tubs. We may need an electrician to ensure there is sufficient capacity and that your fuse board is up to code. Drainage can be important, particularly where we are digging out a significant portion of a sloping garden or installing a sunken level.

There is a lot to consider, but we will guide you and make sure we use or experience to ensure you get the best result and get a quality decking solution that lasts for many years. There is no charge for our design services, because we believe it is our responsibility to advise you on what will work and not work, what is required to meet regulations and help you determine what will suit your needs.

Caring For Your Decking

Both PVC and Composite decks are low maintenance alternatives to wood. There is no need for any annual maintenance such as painting, staining or varnishing. The colours of our PVC and Composite products do not fade or weather like wood. To avoid damaging your deck you should try not to drag furniture and avoid tables and chairs that have exposed or sharp metal feet. Most decking furniture has protective pads on the bottom, so is safe to move as necessary. There is no need to use any harsh chemicals for washing your PVC or Composite decks. Simple soapy water and a soft brush will keep it looking like new. PVC can be power-washed. Not all Composite products can be power-washed, so please check with us when selecting your product.

The Differences Between Wood, PVC and Composite

There are many choices to make when designing a deck. Firstly, you must pick the material in which you want your deck to be built. Many people ask what the differences are between Wood, PVC and Composite. In fact, often the word “Composite” is used to refer to all non-wood products used in decking. PVC decking is made completely of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Composite is a combination of compressed wood and PVC.

Wood Decking

Wood is normally the cheapest option and often is installed by any general contractor or builder. Wood is very versatile, giving you unlimited options of structures you could build on your deck (e.g. planters, benches, pergolas, etc.). Wood, however, is very high maintenance. It normally requires regular scrubbing to remove algae and moss that wood is prone to, especially where there are over-hanging trees or bushes. It is usually necessary to paint, stain or varnish wood decking annually. Wood is also susceptible to become slippery when wet and worse when algae builds up (it may even turn slightly green), so you need to be careful with wood decks in the fall and winter.

PVC Decking

PVC is a great mid-range price option, being slightly more expensive than wood, but somewhat cheaper than Composite. Our Dekboard PVC product is 100% recyclable and is made with an element of recycled materials. PVC comes in a variety of colours that require no annual staining, painting or varnishing and does not fade in the sun. Not only does that make PVC lower maintenance, but it also makes it more environmentally friendly with no toxic paints or varnishes to deal with. PVC decking will not warp or twist as it does not contain any wood polymers so cannot absorb moisture. PVC can be used for most ground and 1st storey levels. This includes garden decks, caravan verandas, balconies, access ramps, outdoor commercial areas, jetties and pool/hot tub surrounds. PVC can be used for some simple deck add-on items such as planters, but it is more difficult and may require finishing with other products. It can be power-washed, but normally only requires cleaning with the hose or soapy water. Our PVC decking products come with a 10-year warranty.

Composite Decking

Composite is pricier than wood or PVC but is a popular choice due to its style and durability. Our Ecodek product is made from approximately 60% sustainably-sourced wood flour and 35% recycled HDPE polymer (recycled plastic milk bottles). It comes with a 25-year guarantee and is available in a wide variety of colours, textures and finishes, allowing you to design a bespoke deck that is suited to your taste. You can even use multiple colours and design patterns to finish your deck with a decorative border or to highlight different areas of your deck. It doesn’t fade, warp, splinter or split. It is easy to maintain, requiring no regular staining or treatment, just an occasional wash down to keep it looking like new. Some of our range of Composite product also can be power-washed, but be careful, not all products can. It is just as versatile as wood for making add-on components and structures such as flower beds and benches.
